Death Doula
Overview, Who Is It For, and What To Expect During Your Session
A Death Doula (also called an End-of-Life Doula or Soul Midwife) is a trained guide who accompanies the dying and their families through the sacred passage of death. Just as a birth doula supports new life entering the world, a death doula honors the profound transition of life departing — offering practical guidance, spiritual presence, emotional support, and ritual.
Death Doulas understand death as a sacred rite of passage rather than a medical failure. They help the dying person complete unfinished emotional and spiritual business, create meaningful end-of-life experiences, and support the family in navigating grief both before and after death.
Who is Death Doula for?
Death Doulas serve those who are dying — whether from terminal illness, advanced age, or sudden diagnosis — as well as their loved ones. They are also sought by those who want to confront their relationship with mortality, complete legacy projects, or do deep healing around death-related fear and grief.
What is Death Doula beneficial for?
- •Conscious, dignified, and meaningful dying process
- •Emotional and spiritual completion of life
- •Relief from fear and resistance around death
- •Support for family members and loved ones
- •Creation of meaningful rituals and final experiences
- •Grief support before and after death
What to expect in a Death Doula session
Initial sessions focus on understanding the dying person's wishes, values, fears, and unfinished business. The doula may facilitate life review conversations, legacy projects, forgiveness work, and preparation of the space for dying. They may be present at the time of death to hold space and guide the transition. Ongoing grief support for family is also offered.
Typical session length: Varies — ongoing support
