From Generators to Projectors, Gates to Channels — a beginner’s guide to the system that reveals how you’re designed to operate.

Human Design is a synthesis system: it borrows structure from astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the Hindu-Brahmin chakra model, and elements of modern physics, and arranges them into a single chart called a BodyGraph. It was formulated by Ra Uru Hu in 1987.

What draws people to it is not the cosmology so much as the practical question at its centre: how are you built to make decisions?

Your chart

A BodyGraph is generated from your birth date, exact time, and location. Two sets of planetary positions are used — one at birth, one roughly three months prior — which is why the chart shows two columns of numbers.

The five Types

  • Generators — the largest group. Built to respond to what is in front of them rather than initiate from nothing, and to follow what genuinely lights them up.
  • Manifesting Generators — a variation that moves faster and often skips steps, jumping between several pursuits at once.
  • Projectors — designed to guide and see others clearly, and to work best when invited rather than pushing forward uninvited.
  • Manifestors — able to initiate independently, and advised to inform the people their actions affect.
  • Reflectors — the rarest, with no consistently defined energy centres, sampling and mirroring the health of the environments they move through.

Strategy and Authority

Each Type has a Strategy — a general way of engaging the world — and each chart has an Authority, the body's own decision-making mechanism. Authority might be emotional (wait out the wave before committing), sacral (a gut yes or no), splenic (a quiet, instantaneous knowing), or several others.

Most practical Human Design work happens here. Rather than adopting a personality label, you experiment with making decisions the way your chart suggests and observe what changes.

Centres, Gates, and Channels

The nine centres are either defined (coloured in — consistent energy) or undefined (white — where you take in and amplify others' energy). Undefined centres are often where people absorb pressure that was never theirs. Gates and Channels add finer detail about specific themes and talents.

What a reading gives you

A skilled analyst will translate the chart into something you can actually test this week: how to tell a real yes from a conditioned one, which environments drain you, and where you have been overriding your own signals. Many people find the description of their undefined centres the most immediately useful part.

Human Design is a framework for self-reflection. It is not a diagnostic tool and makes no clinical claims.
